"The Race Is On": Remembering George Jones

Back in my earlier years when my family would venture down to Thunderbowl Speedway to watch a race, one of the constants of those trips would be the blaring of "The Race Is On" and other hits by George Jones over the public address system. Country music went hand-in-hand with racing and George Jones has always been pure country. When I heard about the death of the ole "Possum" today, that is what I first thought of - those trips down to Thunderbowl and his music playing on those speakers at the race track. Those were some good times.

Ronnie Newsome Wins in Wild West Style Shootout

Special thanks to: Ryan Williams and Woody Hazel for all their help this past weekend.

Videos to follow so keep checking back until all are posted.

This past weekend at Needmore Speedway, it proved to be an old West style showdown with heavy racing, flared tempers, and fierce determination. In the late model division Stacey Roberts made quick use of his super fast Bloomquist chassis race car by sweeping to the front and keeping the lead till the checkered flags dropped. In limiteds, Cole Exum made his debut as a frontrunner by winning his first feature of the season. The hobby division proved to be the main card for the night with fans lining the fence to see what would happen next and they were not disappointed. A battle quickly ensued and positions on the track were swapped with every lap. After some intense competition, "The Comeback Kid", Ronnie Newsome took the checkered flag for his second win of the season. In superstreet, Michael Ford was back in form by taking charge of the field and coming across the finish line in first. The newest division at Needmore, the Old School Late Models, raced their second race of the season and had fireworks during and after the race with Needmore Late Model regular, Lavon Sloan winning. The Enduro division was another exciting race to cap off the night and had fans still chomping at the bit for more action. Ryan Hembree kept his momentum going from last year to grab his first win of the 2013 season. It proved to be a wild night and much to the fans' delight. The next race on May 4th will have everyone coming back so we can all find out the answer to our question, "What will happen next?".

NLMS Returns to Waycross Motor Speedway This Weekend

This weekend, April 27th, the NLMS will be returning to Waycross Motor Speedway and bringing all the action and excitement along with it. The $3000 to win race is sure to bring out all regular NLMS heavy hitters and have each battling to collect the money and the trophy. The last time the NLMS was at Waycross it was for the Battle of the Swamp and feature winner Brandon Dewitt won in dramatic fashion. With Mark Whitener coming in and Scott Johnson and Jason Fitzgerald also in attendance Brandon Dewitt and that #2 late model will have his hands full.
Waycross Motor Speedway will also run Pure Stock, Superstreet, and Limited Sportsman with it being a double points night for each division. It's sure to be interesting since the run down of the points leaders goes like this: In Pure Stock the lead is tied between Derrick Jacobs and John Corbitt at 42 points, in the Superstreet division it's a tie between Chris Keller Jr and Scott Crews at 47 points a piece, and in the Limited Sportsman, it's Cecil Eunice Jr. and Hampton White tied at 42 points. You can see why this will be a big night for the other divisions at Waycross and why they'll all lay it on the line for a chance to get one step closer to being the points champion for the 2013 season.
Talking with Michelle Stone from Waycross Motor Speedway, I also learned that they are dropping prices in the grandstands from $20 to $18. That may not seem like a lot to some people but to those who love racing and are watching every penny like myself, it means a lot. A track that cares about its fans is a track that is good for business. Pit prices will be the normal $35 dollars and pit gates will open at 3pm, grandstand gates open at 5pm, hot laps at 6pm, and racing at 7pm. It is sure to be another exciting Saturday night in Waycross and like last time, the stands and pits will be overflowing. To see video of the last series race at Waycross click here. We'll see you there!
